La Buvette Drinkery Adelaide – A Neurodivergent Review

I have been to La Buvette Drinkery in Adelaide twice now! If you’re looking for a sensory-friendly, quality dining experience in Adelaide, La Buvette Drinkery is one of the best.

This classic French bistro has been my pre-show dinner before the fringe and theatre.

Just across from the train station, off of North Terrace, La Buvette Drinkery is easy to access in heels, even if you took the train.

As someone who has high sensory needs, I find this place calming to my nervous system. I am not necessarily ‘a foodie’ because I am not hugely experimental, but I do love high-quality, well-made, house-made foods.

I hate that everyone serves the same things, especially in Australia, especially in Adelaide. Pubs, cafes, and restaurants all have the same menu. Which is great for predictability, it is great to know that I will always have a steak and chips option, a pizza, a pasta, or a schnitzel, but it’s so boring.

Even for someone who has their same order set at Indian restaurants every time, even as someone who always gets the same Fasta Pasta order, if I am truly eating out, I want something different.

La Buvette Drinkery – The Perfect Middle Ground

La Buvette Drinkery is fast becoming a favourite of mine, because it sits exactly where it should in the dining spectrum. Its value is exceptional, as its service, quality and price line up exactly as it should.

I find that there are three types of restaurants:

  1. Fine Dining: These are your white table cloths, ample service, small portions, perfectly presented food, excellent atmospheres and expensive prices.
  2. Casual Dining: This is where La Buvette Drinkery sits, but I feel it is offensive to call it ‘casual’, as it makes me think of jeans. You could wear jeans, of course, but I wouldn’t associate this place with jeans. These are your restaurants where there’s a lovely atmosphere, servers take your order at the table, but you may go up to pay at the end. They have quality food and presentation with mid-range pricing.
  3. Fast Casual: These are your pubs, chain restaurants, and your local Chinese. The majority serve the same foods, which are of average quality, but they are of large sizes and moderate prices. The service is limited, and the atmosphere is often loud and open.

Now this seems pretty simple to navigate, depending on your needs. What I have found, though, is that recently, the lines have blurred.

Fast casual used to be reliably cheap, yet if you were to order a steak and chips here, it may come with a small garnish of side salad, but it would still be $40. The steak I had at La Buvette Drinkery was the same price, but of much better quality, with a much better atmosphere.

I have found that these fast casual restaurants have upped their prices without increasing their services, whilst casual dining restaurants like La Buvette Drinkery offer significantly more in terms of service, quality and atmosphere with only a slightly higher price tag.

The only issue is that I have been to many casual dining restaurants in Adelaide in this mid-range, and the majority have left me wishing I had just put in an extra $50 and gone to a fine dining restaurant instead.

I think that the majority of fine dining does differentiate from the other two, but there’s something about white tablecloths that is really important to me. No matter how modern they feel, I don’t want to pay $60-70 for a meal without some white linen.

Atmosphere at La Buvette Drinkery, Adelaide.

I can’t quite decide what is more important to me, the quality of the food or the environment. One can so easily take away from the other.

La Buvette Drinkery has an incredible atmosphere. Sometimes, a restaurant will aim for moody and just be dark, but the level of lighting in La Buvette Drinkery is perfect! Every light is softened with beautiful shades that hang like glowing balls from the ceiling.

The raw wood makes you feel like you are warm and safe. The open beams take you back to prohibition bars, and the mosaic floors provide a strip of French café vibes.

The extensive bar is certainly the feature, which makes sense as it is a drinkery. The way it seamlessly is part of, and apart from, the rest of the restaurant allows you to always get someone’s attention if you need service.

There are also personal touches that make you feel like you are in France, decorative wine bottles and French paintings, gold trim and crystal candle holders.

The round café tables and the soft banquette bench along the wall allow for flexible seating. Alternatively, there are plenty of bentwood chairs to sit comfortably.

La Buvette Drinkery – Seating

It is a real pain when you go for dinner and you’re uncomfortable in your seat. I’ve always found bentwood chairs to be quite comfortable, the warm wood, sturdy structure and upright back seem to just fit a person’s body.

I am tired of stools where you have to hold your body up in some strong posture, metal chairs that are cold, or woven chairs that stick to the back of your legs in summer.

The only issue with seating at La Buvette Drinkery would be that the banquette bench is a bit high for the table, even for me at 5’8. I found it fine as I could place my feet on the legs of the table, but I would suggest that if you were little, it may feel a bit dangly. I would assume that the general man wouldn’t have an issue, though, but just something to keep in mind.

La Buvette Drinkery – A Sensory Delight

Short of feeling transported to another time and place – Paris, of course. La Buvette Drinkery atmosphere is well executed. The background music is at exactly the right volume to create a comfortable vibe without distracting. There was one song that played, which had a reggae vibe that did feel like it went on forever, but other than those 3-5 minutes, the music choice and volume were fantastic.

Also, not only are my senses all turned up like Spider-Man, but when it comes to background music, it is exceptionally difficult to please me because more often than not, I find it incredibly invasive. To be somewhere where it was exactly the right level of ignorable, whilst impactful, is an achievement!

The temperature, too, is often a huge factor that can entirely ruin a dining experience. I have been to another restaurant not far from La Buvette Drinkery twice now, and both times I have had to keep my jacket on. I don’t put the effort into dressing up, just to cover it up.

The temperature at La Buvette Drinkery was perfect. Another thing that is challenging to do in a bigger space with high ceilings, but I loved that they prioritised customers’ comfort.

So many restaurants will say, ‘Oh, but the staff are hot.’ I’ve worked in hospitality a lot. You are running around, you are hot, it is your job to either wear cooler clothes or get over it, because it is not about the staff. Lots of restaurants seem to have forgotten the ‘customer comes first’ feeling, but not La Buvette Drinkery.

La Buvette Drinkery – Service

The service is also wonderful. There’s not a waiter with a napkin over their arm opening your bottle of champagne with a flourish, but there are fast, responsive, polite, intelligent and welcoming waiters.

Both times I have been, I have had a set time I needed to leave, which is frustrating when you want to enjoy your evening calmly. However, both times the servers have done everything in their power to advise me on which dishes take the most time, communicate with the kitchen about when I need my food, and answer all my questions about the menu items.

The staff here make you feel special, without being invasive. They are very well trained, and I get the impression they were happy to be there, not just trying to earn a living wage whilst pursuing philosophy at university.

La Buvette Drinkery – Food

The food is exceptional!

There isn’t a huge range of food, but there is certainly enough to find something you will like. They have very interesting, authentic French cuisine, ranging from full meals to smaller options.

I don’t personally enjoy seafood, but their range looks incredible. The lady sitting next to me had a lobster that looked very impressive. The couple on the other side of us shared oysters too, which seemed very good as I heard them talking to their neighbours about them. They also serve escargots (snails), which I did try in Paris, but I don’t know if I’d be interested in having them again.

My tastes are a bit less refined. I have had the steak and chips twice and varied my other dishes. The steak has been cooked to perfection both times! It is perfectly seasoned and of excellent quality. I found the chips to be a bit overcooked, but they had this homey quality about them with the skin still on the ends, which I loved.

Speaking of potatoes, I have also tried the croquettes, which were amazing as an Irish-blooded potato lover! Then, when I ordered the baked camembert this last time, it was served with roasted cocktail potatoes, and honestly, they were the sweetest potatoes I think I have ever had. They had so much flavour, I hardly shared with mum! That was okay, though, because she had the mushrooms, which she said were great!

For something a little braver, I have tried the duck rillettes, and when it says ‘with accompaniments’, they really mean it. Their bread, pickles and greens are extensive, not tokenistic.

My mum ordered a green leaf salad, which I said she could more than happily waste her time on. But although it was simple, she was astounded by how fresh and crisp the ingredients were, and she was glad she ordered it.

Now, my mum is much more of a foodie than I am, and this is the real measure of a good restaurant… When we left, she said that the peppercorn sauce that was served with the steak was the best she had ever had in her life!

My mum has worked in kitchens most of her life, and factoring in that she’s over 65, she’d easily have a good 40 years of experience by now. That is a strong statement to make!

It really doesn’t matter what you get, though; it all looks and tastes amazing. You can tell the chefs don’t take shortcuts. Everything is made from scratch, exceptionally well balanced with the freshest, highest quality ingredients. The serving sizes are wonderful to share, but not so big you couldn’t eat yourself, and the value is just fantastic!

La Buvette Drinkery – The Drinks

I don’t have a lot to say about the drinks because I don’t drink that much, well, other than prosecco. The cocktail list did seem great, and there were lots of wine options, as well as spirits, ciders, beers, and anything else you could want.

I did have a class of bubbles the first time, and the second, I branched out and had berry liquor with bubbles, which was nice! I would love to go here with someone who knows about wine and try some more, but maybe next time.

La Buvette Drinkery – A Neurodivergent Person’s Dream Restaurant

From sensory overload to justice sensitivity and picky tastes, as a neurodivergent person, I often find eating out stressful despite really loving the experience when it’s done right.

Most of my experiences at casual dining are met with too much stimulation from the noise, the temperature, and the average food and service. Factor in that I am quite prejudiced against anything I find unjust, such as high prices for poor quality. For example, pubs that charge extra for a salad that should come on your plate. All of this means that I often don’t enjoy my cheaper meals out.

Fine dining is often wonderful, but it can be hard to manage for a different reason. Firstly, the expense is considerable, but even the fancy food can be problematic. I always enjoy quality and service, but still like to stick to safe food options.

La Buvette Drinkery sits perfectly in the middle. Nothing feels overpriced; in fact, it is exceptionally reasonable. The quality and service feel perfect for the environment, and the atmosphere is exceptional. The food is just the right mix of adventurous and simple, and overall, it is just a lovely space to spend some time.

If you struggle with sensory sensitivities or food aversions, but you like experiencing interesting foods, this is the place to go!
